VOLUNTEER WITH US IN 2025

Shines Children will run its first full volunteer program from 7 July 2025. Volunteers can participate for either of the following three week periods:

  • 7 July to 25 July

  • 28 July to 15 August

Volunteers can work in a wide range of programs, including:

  • Primary education: volunteering in Shines Children's Foundation School supporting primary school staff to deliver lessons in literacy, numeracy, English language, music, art and sport

  • Healthcare: volunteering in a local clinic/horpital to support the work of local doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals

  • Health education: working with the Shines outreach team delivering community education in health, sexual health and nutrition

  • Entrepreneurship: volunteering in the local community to offer mentoring and training in basic financial management and other business skills to local women and youth who are starting small businesses

  • Sport: volunteering in Shines Football Academy, delivering football coaching and helping to deliver other important messages to young men and boys

  • IT literacy: training young people in using personal computers and common applications such as Word, Excel and Outlook (and introducing coding skills where possible)

  • Environmental education: helping the local community to become more environmentally aware, including tree planting and constructing solar ovens

All volunteering opportunities will take place in the town of Masindi, Western Uganda. Masindi is a friendly, walkable town, about 4 hours' drive from Entebbe Airport and the capital city of Kampala. Although Masindi is growing fast, it still retains the feel of a small town, far from the pollution, chaos and high crime rates of a large city like Kampala.

Much of Shines' work is centred on the village of Miirya, about 8km from Masindi. However, Shines also undertakes outreach work throughout the district, in numerous other villages and communities.

There will be no charge for the volunteering opportunity itself, but all volunteers will need to meet their own expenses (other than return travel between Entebbe Airport and Masindi, and local travel to volunteer placements). You will be responsible for arranging and paying for your own:

  • flights

  • visa

  • accommodation and food in Masindi

  • travel insurance

  • vaccinations and malaria prophylaxis

  • local SIM card
