VOLUNTEER WITH SHINES IN 2026

Volunteering with Shines takes place in and around Shines Primary School in Miirya, near the town of Masindi, Western Uganda. Volunteers stay in Masindi itself and travel daily to the campus. Masindi is a friendly, walkable town, about 4 hours' drive from Entebbe Airport and the capital city of Kampala. Although Masindi is growing fast, it still retains the feel of a small town, far from the pollution and chaos of a large city like Kampala.

 

Volunteers are responsible for their own expenses, including a contribution to vehicle and driver hire. You will be responsible for arranging and paying for your own:

• flights

• visa

• accommodation and food in Masindi

• travel insurance

• vaccinations and malaria prophylaxis

• local SIM card

General volunteering: From 4 to 25 July 2026 we will have opportunities for up to 7 volunteers to travel to Masindi and take part in volunteer projects with Shines. We don't pre-determine what projects will be available as it will depend on the skills and interests of those who volunteer. In 2025, projects included film-making with children from Shines School, teacher capacity building, sports education, land titling and food and nutrition education. Volunteers must be aged over 18 and will be required to donate a minimum of £600 to Shines for the opportunity.

General volunteering

Medical Camp 2026: Shines will run two medical camps in the same two-week period in October 2026. We invite healthcare professionals of all kinds to volunteer their services for these events. The previous three medical camps have treated many hundreds of people free of charge, and have referred patients on to other charities and hospitals for further treatment. It is a deeply rewarding experience from which volunteers gain as much as they give.

We would be thrilled to welcome all doctors, nurses, midwives, optometrists, pharmacists, dentists and any other related profession to help us to make 2026's annual medical camps the best and biggest yet.
