NEWS FROM SHINES
We aim to update this page with all the news from our projects in Uganda. Please check in regularly to see what has been going on.
SHINES SCHOOL OFFICIAL OPENING
July 2024
Shines School opened in 2018 with just one building, and in 2019 a second classroom block was built.
Soon after that, the Covid-19 pandemic closed all schools in Uganda for almost two years. But in 2023 we received a generous donation from the estate of Dr Janet Wolf, which enabled us to complete the school by constructing a third block of classrooms, as well as a library, an ICT suite and administrative offices.
In July 2024, the school was officially opened by the Bishop of Masindi, in the presence of honoured guests from the Ugandan government and the US and Japanese embassies.
MEDICAL CAMP 2024
October 2024
Building on the success of the 2023 Medical Camp, in October 2024 Shines held a camp in the village of Miirya at which, over two days, 1,569 people were treated for a variety of conditions, entirely free of charge.
Volunteer doctors from the UK and elsewhere in Uganda joined local medical, healthcare and pharmacy teams in a collaborative effort between agencies that was the first of its kind in the local area.

TEENAGE MOTHERS IN MBALE DISTRICT
November 2024

Since 2023, Shines has been working with Ugandan partner organisation "Care for Girls" to support a group of teenage mothers in Mbale District, all of whom became pregnant through rape or forced marriage.
None of the girls finished school and they all have very low chances of employment to enable them to support themselves and their babies.
Shines has supported some of the group to learn tailoring and in 2025 will help them to set up a workshop from where they can run a small business.
